The Importance of having an Open Mind

I passionately believe that all of the worlds’ social inequalities could be fixed if everyone lived their lives with an open mindset. To have an open mind allows you to accept people for who they are, what they believe, and why they do what they do. The issue is that whether it be locally or nationally, humans tend to subconsciously follow the pattern of those who they interact most with. And when a close-minded person is confronted with an opposing opinion, they either deny any basis of truth or attempt to change the other person’s mind. An example is politics when most people “debate” about politics; it is really an attempt to push one’s views amongst another, and it translates to real-life experiences. It is never ok to try and force someone to believe what you believe. The main objective of talking about opposing opinions is to inform one another on your views and to develop further your personal opinion based on a different perspective.

It is time that people begin accepting the differences in others. And it’s important to note that when I say “accepting,” I don’t mean we have to understand everything about everyone’s culture, you certainly cannot be expected to comprehend every difference. Though we must learn to respect different beliefs and accept people as they are.

“For after all, the best thing one can do when it is raining is let it rain.”
― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
